I declare these gates....gates |
FB welcomes the new floodgates. He is sure that they will save many lives in the years to come.
The new floodgates' worth was immediately obvious to all attending the ceremony. Despite a night and day of torrential rain which epitomises cricket weather in Scotland at its finest, the whereabouts of all Carlton juniors could be fully accounted for. Previous years had seen the small cricketers increasingly at risk of being swept away in any kind of rainfall at the ground.
FB cannot be sure, but he thinks that these gates were foreseen in Biblical times. The words of Psalm 24 in particular - Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, and the King of Glory shall come in. Words inspiringly set by Handel in Messiah and presented on this link.
As the Psalm goes on - Who is the King of Glory - what number does he bat? A subject cricketers everywhere continue to discuss.
*FB would like to make it clear to his handful of worldwide readers that there is no truth in the rumour that his febrile condition was caused by winning three tosses in succession in the opening games of the season.
The WFDG tells me that he is sorry to hear of FB's indisposition and has asked me to send his good wishes for a speedy recovery. He notes, however, that it may have been as well that FB was unable to come to the opening of the gates since, despite the undoubted quality, quantity and variety of the food on offer, there was not an empire biscuit in sight.
ReplyDeleteThe WFDG also wonders if, now that we have had an official ceremony to open the gates, we will have another one to start the clock.
FB is sure that you can't have too many official ceremonies and a clock starting one might be an early opportunity for the organising committee to rectify their lack of attention to the provision of empire biscuits which is a truly shocking omission. FB is grateful to WFDG for his good wishes. He is firmly on the mend.
DeleteA cursory glance at the picture suggests that the floodgates may not be up to the job. A redesign may therefore be required.
ReplyDeleteFB understands that the design has been specially developed to ensure that the spaces in the gate are narrow enough to ensure that no junior member could be swept through it and so washed away.
DeleteHowever, in severe flooding, of the type we all experienced last year - there is real danger of a few being caught on those spikes as they surf the wave....
